Description
At the intersection of Barnard and West Macon streets, between West Harris and West Charlton streets, you’ll find Pulaski Square. Pulaski is one of the later developed squares which was part of the grid expansion of General Oglethorpe’s city plan.
It was designed in 1837 and named after Polish General Casimir Pulaski, an 18th century freedom fighter who killed during the Siege of Savannah. There is no statue or fountain in this square. But, about six blocks southeast, in Monterey Square, there is a monument dedicated to him.
Opening up to the square is the house of Francis S. Bartow, a confederate hero, who was the first high-ranking man from Georgia to be killed in the Civil War.
